Heartsaver® courses from AHA offer: a cohesive, consistent experience for the learner, best practices to give students the best possible learning experience and help them better retain information with enhanced and realistic scenarios, while providing course and content flexibilityHeartsaver® courses from the American Heart Association are designed for anyone with little or no medical training who needs first aid and/or CPR training and a course completion card for job, regulatory (e.g., OSHA), or other regulatory or licensing requirements. Heartsaver® courses can also be taken by anyone who wants to be prepared to act in an emergency at work or home.

Heartsaver® First Aid Course

THE HEARTSAVER® FIRST AID COURSE IS FOR DESIGNED NON-HEALTHCARE PROVIDER PROFESSIONS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC WHO WANT TO LEAN BASIC FIRST AID.

This class will satisfy requirements for non-healthcare programs, including licenses requiring CPR AED. This class WILL NOT fulfill requirements for healthcare education programs at all Wisconsin colleges, universities, and technical colleges.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The participants who complete this training program will be certified by the American Heart Association as a First Aid Provider. You will learn to manage illness and injury until professional help arrives. Includes general principles, medical emergencies, injury management, and relieve choking in adults, children, and infants, and environmental emergencies. American Heart Association certification eCard provided. 

 

COURSE LENGTH

The course includes a DVD presentation, lecture, practical application, and skills test. Below are the approximate times by section:

  • First Aid - 2 hours approximately

(Note: Class time can be extended to ensure all material is covered following the AHA Guidelines.)

Heartsaver Pediatric Training

The Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid course was designed by the American Heart Association to meet the regulatory and credentialing requirements for all childcare workers. More specifically, this course is intended for:

  • Child care workers
  • Teachers
  • Coaches
  • Camp counselors
  • Youth group leaders
  • Anyone else responsible for children

This course is taught in addition to the Heartsaver CPR and AED course which covers adults, children, and infants. The content for this course covers several topics. These topics include:

  • Adult, child, and infant first aid, CPR, and AED
  • Pediatric first aid basics
  • Pediatric medical, injury, and environmental emergencies
  • Pediatric first aid topics including eye injuries, fever, suspected abuse, and bites (OPTIONAL)
  • Asthma care training (OPTIONAL)

Heartsaver CPR and AED

This course is designed for anyone with little to no medical training. It includes everything in the normal Heartsaver training, except for the first aid portion. Students will cover the key changes in the new 2010 AHA guidelines and:

  • Adult CPR and AED
  • Child/Infant CPR and AED as well as child/infant choking (OPTIONAL)

Heartsaver First Aid Class

This course is meant for students who only need to satisfy school and/or license requirements for first aid certification. There is no CPR or AED training taught with this course.

Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens

The purpose of this course is to teach the proper way to protect yourself and others from being exposed to bloodborne pathogens. Per the AHA, this course meets the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements for bloodborne pathogens training when paired with site-specific instruction.

This course is designed for anyone who may come in contact with bloodborne pathogens during work. Some of those groups include:

  • Protective services
  • Gym staff
  • Anyone involved in childcare
  • Cleaning staff - hotels, schools, etc.
  • Business/Factory safety crews

This AHA course uses the acronym PACT, which stands for protect, act, clean, and tell. Students will learn how to:

  • Protect themselves from exposure to bloodborne pathogens
  • Act when exposed to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace
  • Clean themselves and the area when exposed to blood or blood-containing materials
  • Tell or report any exposure to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace
